Passive Knee Orthoses Assistance in Functional Electrical Stimulation Cycling in an Individual With Spinal Cord Injury

چکیده

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) may be used in rehabilitation and assistance of people with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). One significant application is facilitating physical exercise, mainly when combining FES mechanical platforms, such as tricycles. However, there are still technical challenges cycling protocols, improving control performance. Here we show how passive elements knee orthoses during could increase the average cadence, taking advantage movement. Our approach twofold. First, simulated forward dynamics a detailed musculoskeletal model over knees. Simulations showed that specific spring stiffness ranges increased crankset speed by more than 50%. Using parameters found simulations, built pair performed experiments one individual SCI. During two days, volunteer cycled similar stimulation magnitude without elements. We observed was higher 10% springs were attached to orthoses. These results potential using for or even lower magnitude, leading longer exercise duration.

Knee kinetics during functional electrical stimulation induced cycling in subjects with spinal cord injury: a preliminary study.

The purpose of this preliminary study was to describe pedal effectiveness parameters and knee-joint reaction forces generated by subjects with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) during functional electrical stimulation (FES)-induced bicycling. Three male subjects (age 33-36 years old), who were post-traumatic SCI (ASIA-modified level A, level T4-C5) and enrolled in an FES rehabilitation program, ...

Monitoring of spasticity and functional ability in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury with a functional electrical stimulation cycling system.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the integration of motor function and spasticity assessment of individuals with spinal cord injury into cycling therapy. METHODS Twenty-three participants with incomplete spinal cord injury performed 18 training sessions (standard deviation (SD) 14) on an instrumented tricycle combined with functional electrical stimulation. Each therapy ses...
